چکیده

Recently, some novel surface engineering techniques have been developed, which may be used for extending lifetime of artificial joints; however, the full potential will not be realised until the tribological behaviour of surface engineered bio-medical materials has been fully characterised. In the present investigation, a pin-on-disc tribometer has been used to evaluate the tribological response of UHMWPE to untreated, PVD DLC coated, nitrogen ion implanted, ‘TO’-treated, ‘OD’-treated Ti6Al4V counterfaces under water lubricated conditions. Experimental results showed that the tribological behaviour of UHMWPE under water lubricated sliding conditions could be significantly improved by all these surface engineering techniques. The TO treatment has been identified as the most effective surface engineering technique for Ti6Al4V counterfaces, to reduce the wear of UHMWPE. This is can be attributed to the surface oxide layer formed during the TO treatment, which has favourable tribological compatibility with UHMWPE. q 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All

Investigation of Wear Behavior of Biopolymers for Total Knee Replacements Through Invitro Experimentation

The average life span of knee prosthesis used in Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is approximately 10 to 15 years. Literature indicates that the reasons for implant failures include wear, infection, instability, and stiffness. However, the majority of failures are due to wear and tear of the prosthesis. The most common biopolymer used in TKR  is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). Pr...

Tribological characterization of a biocompatible thin film of UHMWPE on Ti6Al4V and the effects of PFPE as top lubricating layer.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) thin film was coated onto Ti6Al4V alloy specimens using dip coating method. Tribological performance of this coating (thickness of 19.6 ± 2.0 μm) was evaluated using 4 mm diameter Si(3)N(4) ball counterface in a ball-on-disk tribometer. Tests were carried out for different normal loads (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 N) and rotational speeds of the disk ...

The Wear Behavior of Textured Steel Sliding against Polymers

Artificially fabricated surface textures can significantly improve the friction and wear resistance of a tribological contact. Recently, this surface texturing technique has been applied to polymer materials to improve their tribological performance. However, the wear behavior of textured tribo-pairs made of steel and polymer materials has been less thoroughly investigated and is not well under...

Tribological Property of FG/UHMWPE Composites

Fluorinated graphene/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (FG/UHMWPE) composites were prepared by ultrasonic dispersion and hot pressing. The mechanical propertys and tribological property of pure UHMWPE and FG/UHMWPE composites were investigated by micro hardness tester and high-speed reciprocating friction tester. The wear volume of the sample was measured by the scanning electron microsc...

Aging effect on the tribological behavior of a Novel 3Y-TZP/Nb Biocomposite against Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the friction and wear behavior of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) against 3Y-TZP and a novel 3Y-TZP/niobium (Nb) biocomposite. The ceramic and the biocomposite materials were subjected to an accelerated aging process to evaluate the changes in the tribological behavior after this treatment. To carry out the tribological tests, a reciprocat...
